What Wheel Alignment Numbers Actually Mean: Camber, Caster and Toe Explained

If you've ever picked up your car after a wheel alignment and glanced at the printout, you've probably seen three words you didn't grow up knowing: camber, caster and toe.
They sound technical, but understanding roughly what they measure makes it a lot easier to understand why your mechanic is recommending an alignment in the first place and why "just eyeballing it" was never going to fix the problem.
Camber: how your wheel leans
Camber is the angle of your wheel when you look at the car from the front. If the top of the tyre leans inward toward the engine, that's negative camber. If it leans outward, that's positive camber. A small amount of camber is built into most cars by design, but too much in either direction wears the inside or outside edge of the tyre unevenly — often before the rest of the tread has anywhere near worn out. Incorrect camber is also one of the most common results of hitting a pothole or gutter hard enough to bend a control arm or strut.
Caster: how your steering axis tilts
Caster is harder to see but easier to feel. It's the angle of the steering axis when viewed from the side, and it's what gives your steering wheel the tendency to return to centre after you come out of a turn. Too little caster and the car feels light and vague on the highway; steering doesn't want to self-centre and the car can feel like it's wandering. Too much and the steering gets heavy at low speed, particularly noticeable when parking.
Toe: which way your tyres are actually pointing
Toe is the easiest one to picture: it's whether your tyres point slightly toward each other (toe-in) or slightly away from each other (toe-out) when viewed from above. Even a few millimetres out of spec here causes rapid, feathered wear across the tread — the kind of wear you can feel by running your hand across the tyre but can't easily see just by looking at it. Toe is also the setting most affected by everyday driving — hitting a gutter parking, a solid pothole, or even a minor kerb strike can knock it out.
Why the numbers matter more than "it looks straight"
A car can look like it's tracking straight and still be out on all three of these measurements, because they interact with each other. That's why a proper wheel alignment uses a laser or camera-based alignment rig to measure all three angles against the manufacturer's exact specification for your make and model, rather than adjusting until the steering wheel looks centred. Get it right and you'll notice straighter tracking, less steering effort, and — the part that actually saves you money — tyres that wear evenly and last the distance they're rated for instead of needing replacement a year early.
