How to Safely Change a Spare Tyre (And When You Shouldn't)

You're parked on the side of a busy road, the car's leaning awkwardly, and the last time you looked at the spare was approximately...... never.
But before you get the jack out, there are a few things worth knowing — because changing a tyre in the wrong place, in the wrong way, can turn an inconvenience into a genuine emergency.

Before You Start: Is It Safe Here?
Pull well clear of traffic, onto a flat, stable surface. Not the edge of a freeway. Not on a curve. Not on a slope where the car could roll. Hazard lights on immediately. If you're on a busy road and can't safely get clear of traffic, it may be safer to call for assistance and wait.
The Right Way to Use a Jack
Find the correct jacking point (your owner's manual shows exactly where). Placing the jack anywhere else risks bending the sill or having the car slip off. Before raising the car, loosen the wheel nuts slightly while the tyre is still on the ground. You can't get enough force once the wheel is in the air.
Fitting the Spare
Space-saver spares (the skinny ones) have strict limitations (typically maximum 80km/h and a distance limit). Not for daily use, not for highway driving. Fit wheel nuts in a star pattern, then tighten once the wheel is down. Check the torque again after 50km.
When You Shouldn't Change It Yourself
On a freeway with limited shoulder. After a blowout where the vehicle may be unstable. On an AWD vehicle with more than one damaged tyre. On a slope where the jack can't sit level. In dark, wet conditions on a bend.
