How Melbourne's Weather Actually Wears Out Your Tyres Faster
Share
Melbourne's reputation for having four seasons in one day isn't just a joke about needing an umbrella and sunglasses in the same afternoon. That same swinging weather has a real measurable effect on how fast your tyres wear and how well they perform.
Temperature swings affect tyre pressure daily
Tyre pressure changes with temperature. As a rough rule, pressure shifts by roughly 1 psi for every 5–6°C change. On a day that starts at 8°C and climbs to 28°C, which isn't unusual across a Melbourne spring day, that's enough of a swing to move a tyre from correctly inflated in the morning to noticeably underinflated by evening, or vice versa depending on which reading you took the pressure at. Underinflated tyres run hotter, wear faster on the outer edges, and use more fuel.
Wet roads punish tyres that are already borderline
Melbourne's rainfall is spread fairly evenly across the year rather than concentrated in one wet season, which means tyres rarely get an extended dry stretch to "recover." A tyre that's a little low on tread might get away with it on dry roads for a while longer than it should, but the same tyre on wet roads loses its ability to channel water away from the contact patch much sooner, well before it reaches the legal minimum tread depth.
Heat accelerates rubber ageing
On the flip side, Melbourne's hot summer days accelerate the natural ageing process in tyre rubber covered in our tyre-age article . UV exposure and heat both speed up the oxidation that hardens rubber over time. A tyre parked outside through a run of 35°C plus days is ageing faster than the same tyre garaged or parked in shade.
What this actually means for your maintenance routine
The practical takeaway is that a "check it once and forget it" approach to tyre pressure doesn't really work in Melbourne's climate. Checking pressure monthly, and after any significant swing in temperature, catches problems before they turn into uneven wear. It's also worth having tread and general tyre condition checked a little more often than the bare minimum, simply because the conditions here work against tyres a bit harder than a more stable climate would.
If it's been a while since your tyres were properly checked swing by TYREPLUS HTR in Hallam, Dandenong-area, Glen Waverley, Wantirna or Cheltenham and we'll get it checked in a few minutes.
